1978! President Carter was in the oval office, disco in the dance halls, and the Blues were getting new life from a very unlikely source. Two unlikely sources actually. Dan Akroyd and John Belushi.
What started out as a skit on Saturday Night Live, soon became a popular sound with the youth and older generation alike. Jake and Elwood Blue (John and Dan) were 2 brothers from Chicago, who when not spending time in Joliet prison, were playing the blues.
The band,(featuring blues greats like Matt 'Guitar' Murphy and Alan 'Mr. Fabulous' Rubin) hand picked by Belushi and Akroyd, began touring the country and making records.
In 1980, they sang their way into a feature film simply entitled "Blues Brothers". The film featured guest performances by musical guests including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway and James Brown. It's success was more than just a cult following, and the "blues" were revitalized. Non-musical co-stars include Kathleen Freeman, Henry Gibson, Carrie Fisher and Frank Oz.

A sequel to the movie was made in 1998 (sans Belushi) called "Blues Brothers 2000". Some say this movie was even better than the first.
Many of the previous movies' guests returned and were joined by John Goodman, Joe Morton and Nia Peeples. A battle of the bands at the end of the movie pitted the Blues Brothers Band against the "Louisiana Gator Boys". This group (LGB)contained phenominal greats like Eric Clapton, BB King, Gary U.S. Bonds, Travis Tritt, Lou Rawls, Issac Hayes, Willie Weeks (I could go on and on)
Although there were 18 years between movies, The Blues Brothers Band did not lie dormant. They toured and released several albums during that time.
